/ ABOUT THE MMABC /
The Mixed Martial Arts Association of British Columbia (MMABC) has structured a multi-tiered classification system that allows martial artists to start at a level of competition that is appropriate to them, and to elevate that level only when their abilities warrant doing so. This improves upon the current system of placing aspiring fighters directly into full-contact competitions under the same conditions as much more experienced professionals. Refer to the rules section for complete class breakdown and rule variations.
Some Key points when amateurs compete...
Class C and B are what would typically be seen in tournament format, again refer to rules for full description. No medicals are required for this type of competition.
Class A is for amateurs at the higher skill and experience levels. These competitions would more closely resemble a Golden Gloves Amateur boxing event, taking place as single fights, staged in a ring or cage and contested with more contact. Class A competitors are also required to pass stringent medical clearances, refer to "medical requirements" – Class A varies drastically from Professional MMA in these main areas...
- 3 x 3min rounds – 6oz amateur style glove – limits on twisting leg submissions
- Referee much more involved – quicker stoppages – limits on altitude and amplitude of slams
The Mixed Martial Arts Association of British Columbia (MMABC) rules are specifically geared toward growing the sport of MMA by ensuring a safe and healthy environment for those who are just starting out as competitive athletes.
